Guillermo Buenrostro Gallegos Jr. was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He grew up on the streets of South Central and attended different high schools, including Fremont High, El Rancho High, and Somersett High, all in different parts of Los Angeles. Throughout his high school career, Guillermo worked in construction with his father and uncle. After graduating from high school, Guillermo joined Youth Employment Systems YouthBuild where he built on his construction knowledge and had the opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity. The most important lesson learned during his experiences at YES YouthBuild was how to work in his community. Guillermo was awarded a scholarship to continue his education at a local community college. His studies focused on Community Planning and Economic Development. This was a university-level program taught in community college. During this time he learned that education was very important to him. In college he was awarded with different certificates. He also became more politically active and was involved in the Associated Student Organization (ASO). In addition, Guillermo began working in his community with youth groups and organizations that focused on different issues in Los Angeles. He also started getting involved with campaign work. And, he assisted in the campaign to drop the cost of student’s tuition and the cost of books at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
